Poetry vs Science

I played a computer game yesterday – shockingly. I slept-in and read a book. I didnt have my morning shower till 2pm. I didnt plan to but I had a lazy dazy day, in a good way. Less than a minute after commencing the computer game I was reaching for the dictionary! Computer games are educational too.

Guile = deceit or cunning

I didnt choose the guile character, I chose someone more respectable. Now it is up to me to save the galaxy from the evil sith! I will fight when others fall, I will rescue those who are helpless, I will triumph, and the powers of the dark lord will crumble as I stride valiantly till justice and peace are restored! Hurrah!

I sewed up the rip in my sheet. How rangy is that. I mean resourceful. Couldn’t be bothered to by a new one.

Im kind of still reeling from just watching the dead poets society, man thats one great movie that got quite intense at the end. Makes you think about life – seize the day and what not. I think my movie tastes are changing. I used to mainly like adventure sci-fi blockbusters like star wars, the matrix, and Indiana Jones. Then I went through a war phase – the thin red line, band of brothers, empire of the sun. But I have recently realised how much i like musicals! High school musical, Fame, Fiddler on the roof, the sound of music, moulian rouge – whats happening to me! Although its weird to begin with, breaking out in song and dance can be quite an effective way to communicate the story and emotions in the movie. Actually I hate Grease (except the “you better shape up song”) and didn’t like the phantom of the opera movie so I guess im not a hardcore musical fan.

After watching the dead poets society I realised that there are more films and books with stories about how inspiring the arts are compared to how inspiring science is (im talking about real science, not science fiction), off the top of my head there is: the dead poets society, fame, high school musical, school of rock, almost famous, finding forester, Billy Elliot, finding neverland etc and i can only think of one for science and thats October sky. There are also quite a few sports ones but they are more about over coming odds rather than how inspiring the actual games are. I think this is probably because the people who make movies relate more to being inspired by the arts rather than the sciences and so can make stories about those experiences. I also think that in general a larger population, not just professional artists, can relate to and be inspired by art, whereas science can get quite technical and boring. Also the arts are quite entertainment orientated to begin with so make for entertaining films a little more easily. Anyway I wonder how good the dead poets society would have been if it was made about a chemistry class rather than English class. There are plenty of inspiring theories in chemistry, all you need is the right teacher and some passionate students.
