Nice light buns

Hot cross buns are back! But if you knew what I knew, and soon you shall, you would know how to be happy always...

In some special places hot X buns are made all! year! round! I am not lying, its true.

I am sorry I didnt tell you sooner.

I think we all just need to take a minute for this to sink in. If your not getting the significance of this, you may be experiencing shock.

The hot cross bun is not to be confused with its nearest relative the fruit bun. The fruit bun is a common bun produced year round in a range of sizes; it is easily found on supermarket shelves the nation over, day in and day out. Fruit buns are always there, even at Easter they are there. In contrast the hot cross bun experiences a shorter though much more glamorous life cycle. The Hot cross bun season peaks once a year on the first weekend of Aprial, however, thankfully due to greedy businesses Easter is promoted at least two months before this date, which adequately allows the masses to maximise there demand for the special buns. During this period lots of Hot cross buns are consumed. The hot cross bun is fondly recognized by its distinctive white cross pattern which is absent from fruit buns. However the differences do not stop there, hot cross buns are generally less sticky than fruit buns, which means that even Ladies can eat them without getting messy. Fruit buns also tend to have a harder shell-like surface compared to the soft and malleable hot cross bun. Looking beyond cosmetics hot cross buns are widely regarded to taste better. They are best cut in half, grilled, buttered and eaten. However, because they are... so-good! they are actually quite delicious raw. Like fruit buns, hot cross buns do vary from place to place, some are actually not that great; but still, the physiological pull of the label “hot cross bun” will make even the lowliest of hot cross bun enjoyable.

Isn’t it a joy to know that each year, someone eats a hot cross bun for the first time?

Anyway, there I was, naive and oblivious to the profound truth I was soon to discover. The place was Gardens New World, Dunedin, it was they year 2006; I saw hot CROSS buns and it wasn’t Easter, and it wasn’t two months before Easter. Can we just pause again here.

Maybe it has been you? Am I alone in this discovery? Could it be that everybody knows and I am actually just the last person to know? If you were a real friend you would have told me!

Ok, so later I saw them there again, but then later they were gone! I was confused about that. But then even later I saw them again a few shelves to the left (2-da-left, 2-da-left...). So I can only conclude that a very rare species of hot cross bun can be found all year round. There is no point denying it, I have seen them for myself.
